Decoy Tips and Secrets for Hunting Whitetail Deer Return to WhiteTail Deer Decoys

Whitetail bucks are notoriously wary. McPherson's video of a buck trying to mount his whitetail doe decoy attests to how realistic they are, or how confused a buck hopped up on testosterone can become. Not only did the buck try to mount the decoy, but when the decoy fell over, it tried to prop it back up using its antlers.

During the whitetail season a hunter will encounter different behaviors during the multiple stages of the rut. These varied behaviors mean that one style of decoy may not suit all hunting scenarios. Attention to the behavior of both bucks and does is very important to choosing a decoy.

When setting up your decoy the hunter must take many things into consideration; wind direction, travel paths, food sources and bedding cover should all be studied. Typically it is not recommended to place your decoy where it will obstruct the pathway to any of these locations. Use the decoy near cover to help blend the decoy into the surrounds, but don't hide the decoy so well that it won't be visible at a distance. If a deer comes around a corner and has a decoy standing there right in front of its face it is likely to get spooked.

McPherson likes to set the doe decoy on the edge of a clearing or field next to the brush, preferably when the deer are grazing in an open field. He then sets up between the deer and the decoy, downwind, so the buck has to walk past him to reach the decoy.

"Feeding poses have been proven over and over again as perhaps the best option for 98-percent of decoy set ups, "said Jerry McPherson, owner Montana Decoys. "It doesn`t matter what time of the year it is or what phase of the breeding season you`re in, a feeding pose is natural, and instills confidence in your set up."

To set up, simply pop the decoy open, insert the fold down back pole, and then insert the two leg poles and you are ready to go. The take down procedure is accomplished by removing the poles and using a simple twist fold technique on the decoy body.

The whitetail Dreamy Doe Decoy and Playmate Feeding Doe Decoy are most effective during the pre- rut and rut of the year. Set these decoys within easy shooting distance of your stand and in view of a buck that is headed down the trail or coming into a field to eat. You may also want to use a doe-in-heat sent with your decoy. When folded they are approximately 2 inches thick and 16 inches in diameter. Added to this great feature, they are flexible enough to stuff and conform into your pack.

Lightweight, durable, compact, realistic and effective .....everything a serious hunter is looking for!
